I have had great success with using zeolite for kitty litter. The smell is minimal (I've an extremely sensitive sense of smell). Furthermore, zeolite is suitable for composting.

I agree. It's an excellent choice.

Not to sound stupid (which I no doubt will), but is zeolite available at any garden center? And, what is the cost as compared with traditional litter? We use a natural corn litter, but it is expensive.

I don't want to sound stupid either but isn't zeolite the ingredient in kitty litter? I know that's what's listed on H-E-B brand.

Although zeolite is in some of the store brand litters, its only enough to help eliminate smells. Most store brands are mostly clay products with zeolite added in small amounts. The clay products are not even good in the compost pile.
Straight zeolite is far better and is good for your compost as well

Post subject:  Where to find zeolite

Far as I know, it is sold only under the name of "Efficient-Z". You can call any of the sources on dirtdoctor.com to find a place (hopefully) near you. If not, ask your local retailer to order some. It's sure to sell.

My husband helps with the city pool in the summer and I went to a pool supply co. and noticed they carry zeolite. Is it ok to use or is it like the pool DE and bad or dangerous to use. I asked the pool supply guy and he didn't know.

No. The kind from the swimming pool place will have chlorine in it. The only type of DE to use will say on the package "food grade".
