Post subject:  Actinovate for St Augustine in the Austin area

I switched to 100% organic lawn and garden care about 30 months ago and have seen a steady improvement in my lawn, shrubs and trees over that time in spite of the draught. When I started I had several spots where the blades of grass had died and some where even the root runners were gone and the ground was bare. As part of my organic program I used Actinovate (Streptomyces lydicus) in 2009 and it helped the turf recover when I started.

At the end of the summer last year I again had some spots where the turf died along with some bare spots. Last Fall I put down compost on the dead and bare spots, and this Spring I put down corn meal in mid-February and corn gluten meal in mid-March. With the rains the St Augustine has responded nicely and the dead/bare spots are receding but not completely gone. I'm thinking of using Actinovate again and was wondering if this is a good time of year for it? It is expensive and I don't want to waste it if it is too ealy to be effective.

Thank you so much for the great resource and advice!
