HELP! About a year and a half ago we transplanted a fairly large Pink Japanese Magnolia. Actually we saved it from being cut down. It was absolutely gorgeous when we dug up the tree. It stands about 9' tall. Well things have not gone really well with the transplant. The tree has suffered from dying limbs and we feel now needs to be pruned in order for it to flourish and recover from its trauma. The dead limbs have not fallen off, but we have lost about 1/2 of this tree. Can a magnolia be pruned? What is the best time of year? What is the best way to prune?

It sounds like you don't have a choice. Dead limbs will not come back to life and they need to be cut off. Trim all the dead back to living tissue. If you have had a couple of freezes like I have now is the best time. If you trim a limb back to the trunk, make sure you leave a branch collar that is explained elsewhere in this forum. Now stand back and see what you have done to the structure and beauty or form of the tree. You may need to cut some additional live limbs to balance the tree, both vertically and horizontally.
This was a large tree to transplant but I'm glad you tried. Do the sick tree treatment now to improve the health of the tree. Don't let the soil dry out in the root zone this winter. Next spring, start foliar feeding at least 1-2 times/month.
