Howdy all, Will do some more research in these forums, but just wanted to post in case someone has a quick answer. Basically, I have 5 Leyland Cypress in a row and the last 2 seem to be dying. I know we had a hot summer here in DFW and these 2 trees do get the afternoon heat badly The other trees are fairly green but this one in particular just started changing within the last 4 days. Any suggestions? Have pics of a good one and a bad one.

Have you been giving it any supplemental water in our awful summer? |

Hi Sandih, Thanks for your reply. I have sprinklers that come on every 2 days and almost directly face these trees. I think part of the issue is that these trees were installed on grade that angles backwards, so possibly I am losing water when I do water, and then the summer heat really did a number on this tree. I have been giving it a good soaking over the last week, but am not sure if I should be hitting it with some fertilizers or plant food. Thanks, RMAC |

Try a slower dripping hose and lay it at the base of the tree. You'll get a deeper soak and won't lose as much water. |

Thanks, I will try that. However, I am thinking it may be something else. I see sap on the tree trunks, so not sure if something is attacking them from the inside. I have 3 other trees in the same line and we are starting to see issues with some of their branches, yet they don't get the full afternoon sun. |

They don't have to be in full sun to be feeling the effects of 2 really bad winters and this summer. If you have not been giving them supplemental watering after they started looking like that, it's probably too late. |

Howdy all, Last update! Unfortunately, lost 2 of the 5 trees. Guess this last Texas summer was too much for them, though 1 of them just never took when we planted it. Event though we were watering, guess it was not deep watering and was just flowing off. Moving forward, we are watering the other 3 with a slow drip as suggested above! Good luck to all, RMAC |

Leyland Cypress trees are barely "acceptable" trees for DFW . . . sure, you can grow them, but expect for some to get hit ever so often. I'd invest in another species. |
