I know that the white mulberry trees are pests, but does anyone know if it is a good idea to plant a black or red one? Will is hybridize, get diseases..etc?

I happen to like all the fruiting mulberry, they are magnets for all types of birds and I like the taste myself. However, I have 10 acres and am not worried about the negatives of the tree. They are short lived, attractive to bores, are near impossible to get grass to grow under them and are extremely messy on a city lot. I like to approach planting a tree with my requirements being the first part of the process. What is your situation and what are your expectations for a tree. Once you decide, it will be easier to determine if any mulberry is right for your situation.

I just really like fruit trees and I am trying to accumulate a wide assortment. A coworker suggested the mulberry but my husband is morally opposed to it because it is so invasive (and it sure seems that way..we went hiking in Bandera county and they were everywhere...it is not as if they are native!). I was just wondering if I could talk him into one that wasn't so bad. We have black alkaline clay and I'm not worried about it being messy...just..uh..P.C.?
