Ten feet isn't very far away. The movement around the root area may have compacted the soil and damaged the tree.

Is this a native tree in the area or was it planted? Please post a photo of the base so we can see how deep it is growing/planted. And post a photo of the area with the septic field and the tree in the photo.

I can't make heads or tails of those photos. Perhaps if you can put a larger, in-focus version up on Flickr, or another photo sharing site (Photobucket is good), or send me a message through this system I'll give you my email address and you can send it to me. I can put the photo up for you.

The base looks like it is buried too deep, but that's only a rough guess from fuzzy photos.

My apologies for the photos. The root flare is still there.
It has an open wound. Like a bullet, but I can rule that out.
I wonder if a rag soaked in Garret juice tied over it for awhile.
Feed back?

More than that, using the sick tree treatment is a good safe approach. And if the tree is still lost, the site is in better shape for whatever else you plant in the future.

Thank you for your help. I will see if I can get this done, and report back.

Your top picture with the orange sap is caused by a fungus.. Many times that is the beginning of dead for a tree.. Haven't heard of a cure at the time.. Our Company deals mostly with Oak Wilt.. If I remember right we have treated those trees with some success..
