Here are a few stores to call in the Orlando area: http://www.dirtdoctor.com/organic/garde ... rch=Search

If the stores do not have what you are looking for, they can get it for you from the Natural Organic Warehouse: https://cart.naturalorganicwarehouse.co ... ation_id=4

If the stores do not want to bring in quality organic products, then you can order direct from the Natural Organic Warehouse.

Hi. I'm from Florida too - over on the west coast, about 2 hours from Orlando. I'm just getting started. I found dried molasses at the feed/farm store so check out those in your area. I am having trouble finding Lava Sand and Texas Greensand. I found two places that carry Greensand but it is from Jersey and I remember reading that it is different from the Texas one so I have to do some research to see if it is good enough. I'll let you know what products I find and where and would appreciate it if you would do the same. I am very excited to see someone else in Florida. Would love to hear what you're doing and how its working.

Also I just have to say that we really need to find someplace within driving distance for some items. Although the internet is great & I have ordered some products that way, the heavier items just become way too expensive to ship.

Our son attends univ of central florida and we own a house in orlando so I am having the same issue finding organic products. I found a nursery called lukas to buy plants from but their knowledge of building soil health is minimal to nonexistant. I also found place that sells florida natives exclusively. I ordered organic products from the warehouse but I really need to find a local source. Right now we are having trouble because the HOA is harassing us to plant sod but so far everyone I find to do the job for us wants to use roundup to kill the weeds before planting. We ripped out the grass in the front yard and planned beds with fla natives but we want grass in the backyard. Anyone have ideas for getting rid of weeds before sodding other than hand removal,... or is that the best bet?

I did a lot of web searches and found a few places here on the west coast of Florida. I have found several places that do hydroponic gardening that also offer organic fertilizers, soil amendments, etc. so you might want to look for hydroponic places and see what they sell. What I did was search the web for places that might have the products I need. Then yesterday I spent the day visiting them to see what products they had and what their prices were. Here are some places that I found.

Simply Hydroponics and Organics. I went to their Hudson store but they have a store in Winter Park. Their website is http://www.simplyhydro.com/

Worms Way is in Tampa. Their website is http://www.wormsway.com/default.aspx

Grace's Hydro is also in Tampa. Their website is http://www.graceshydro.com/ . This was my favorite place. Great products, prices, & staff.

I'm sure there are similar places in Orlando but it will just take some time to find them.

As far as killing weeds before laying sod you could try the vinegar weed killer. Not sure how well it works I'm just getting started and haven't tried it yet. Last year I saw a person in our neighborhood kill off their lawn/weeds by covering it with what looked like black plastic. They had it on for a long time so not sure how long it would take doing it that way.

Hope this helps in some way.

Howard has talked about "solarization" by using clear plastic. Water then put down the plastic so that the moisture in the sun really cooks the ground and the plants under it.

Here is a web site with more information.

thanks, everybody. i am going to try the solarization on the weeds and then fertilize with the protein based animal feed i read about on Howard's website that the new research is telling us about. (i just used cottonseed meal on my own lawn here in Dallas.) i am still looking for a local orlando source for products. After i do all that i will sod the back yard and see how it goes. :) i will let you know what happens.
