Post subject:  Bird That Sounds Like a Horse !

I've heard this sound a few times now. It seems to start at dusk just before it gets totally dark.
Some type of bird is up in the trees and it sounds like a horse whinnying (sp?).
I have not seen it being that I live where there are quite a number of trees.

Anyone know what it might be ?

My guess would be the nighhawk family; common nighthawk, chuck-will's widow. There are places on the web as well as bird cd's where you can listen to the voice. A long shot is the yellow-billed cuckoo.

Sounds like a screech owl to me. Go to owlpages.com and find the audio of their call. I'm 99% sure that's what it is.

yep, it sounds like an Eastern Screech Owl (B song)
"The B-song is a descending whinny call, often given during courtship. Duets may consist of both A and B songs."

I'm glad to help. I had one in my backyard a few months ago but I haven't heard one since. Such an eerie sound.

Post subject:  Owl sounds

My favorite owl call is given by the Barred Owl. They are famous for their who-cooks-for-you call and one they get going can make an amazing array of wild and crazy sounds.

If anyone is interested in owl calls and sounds, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology recently released a new CD of owl sounds. I never knew owls made so many different noises.
