At the end of the nesting season Purple Martins leave their apartment houses and gourds and form large flocks. The flocks may number in the hundreds of thousands of birds. They return to a communal roost at night and fan out during the day to feed.

There is a large roosting location near Denton, in North Texas.

The Purple Martin Conservation Association maintains a list of roost sites.

It is a spectacular view when the martins return each evening. Take the family if you have the opportunity to visit a roost site.

I can remember going out to the post office in Lewisville and watching the PM's gather for the nights roost. What a sight, and even tho Martins don't eat as many mosquitoes as old wives tales tell us, I never got bit in that area. Yes, these are all purple martins.
I raised about 35-40 babies this year in a first year house. Hopefully I will be able to post a no vacancy sign next year.

Hmmm now I'm trying to figure something out. When I was a kid growing up in Carrollton I remember a HUGE congregation of black birds. I assumed they were grackles. Now I think they were purple martins. They made a whole lot of noise and were fascinating.

Nice picture.
