Purple Martin scouts have already started returning to Texas.

The extended spell of cold weather in much of Texas has reduced the available population of flying insects on which martins depend. Its a risk early arrivals take in search of the best nesting locations.

If martins have already arrived at your martin house there is little you can do to help. There have been some reports of martins taking crickets that have been thrown into the air or even taking crickets or mealworms from a platform feeder.

If you have not opened your martin house now is the time. Hopefully when Green Bay and Pittsburgh return home from the Super Bowl they'll take their weather with them.
