I was wondering what type of molasses y'all are usually referring to?

Is it usually the stuff one buys in the feed store or the thicker stuff in the grocery store?

Specifically what is used in making compost tea, food grade or ag. grade?

Thanks!

Dry molasses comes in large bags and is some kind of straw cut into small bits that is coated with a slurry of molasses then dried so you get a wonderful smelling bag of a dried and spreadable product to fertilize the garden. It is used to feed livestock in other (older) applications. Keep it dry or it becomes a sticky mess.

I use a store bought bottle of Grandma's molasses to pour a little into the mix when I'm doing a liquid foliar feeding mix.

Ok good because I have a gallon jug of good food grade molasses and wanted to use it in making compost tea.

According to Deuley's method he adds 1/2 oz of molasses for each gallon of tea. So I am guessing that people usually use the regular food grade molasses (like Grandma's molasses) to make it.

A gallon of molasses! In the cooking world that is a lifetime supply! Did you pick it up at a warehouse club or restaurant supply?

:) We buy it from Azure Standard(http://www.azurestandard.com/). They have several drop offs in San Antonio.

We actually went through our last gallon in about 5 months. I imagine that we will go through it a little faster now that we will be using it in the garden. We really like it!

We can also get a gallon of black strap for $14.00 - 5 gallons for $60.

There is a co-op on Castell in New Braunfels where you can buy molasses at wholesale prices if you bring your own container. A large laundry soap bottle holds about a dollar's worth of wholesale molasses. That was at $0.10 per pound. Don't know the current price.
