Post subject:  Organic Hay Production

I'm interested in finding a consultant to help my design an organic program for my hay operation in NE Texas. Any suggestions?

Just wait a minute & I'm sure the best farmer around, Robt. D. Baird, will respond. Or you could PM him directly. Lives relatively close to your area. I'll watch for what he says, love to read all his posts whether I'm farming or not!

You might also want to talk to the folks at Watson Ranch - http://www.homestead.com/watsonorganic/home.html. This is the second year that we've used their products, and we've seen a major improvement in our hay field. This year, we also used one application of seawater (which is one of the thing Bob Baird highly recommends)

THE FIRST THING TO THINK ABOUT WITH HAY IS THAT WHEN THAT BALE LEAVES THE FIELD THAT 100% OF THE MINERALS AND TRACE MINERALS LEAVE THAT FIELD FOREVER,AND THAT FIELD WILL BE POORER FOR IT. THE N, P & K CAN BE REPURCHASED AND REAPPLIED, BUT YOUR MINERALS AND TRACE MINERALS RANGE FROM IMPOSSIBLE TO VERY EXPENSIVETO REPLACE. IN THEORY HAY SHOULD BE FED IN THE SAME FIELD WHERE IT WAS CUT AND AT WORST ON THE SAME PROPERTY. SELLING HAY IS NOTHING MORE THAN MINING THE MINERALS FROM YOUR SOIL. HAY IS NECESSARY THE WAY MOST OF US DO AGRICULTURE, BUT WE SHOULD TRY TO CHANGE TO WHERE WE HAVE THE CORRECT NUMBER OF ANIMALS ON THE LAND TO HARVEST THE PLANTS WHERE THEY GROW. THIS INCLUDES HAVING ENOUGH LAND PER ANIMAL TO ALLOW PASTURES TO REGROW IN THE FALL TO PROVIDE IN PLACE GRAZING IN THE WINTERTIME. OUR GOAL SHOULD BE TO ONLY NEED HAY IN BAD WEATHER AND SEVERE DROUTH AND LET THE ANIMALS RECYCLE THE REST OF THE GRASS IN PLACE, THEREBY FEEDING THE DUNG BEETLES, EARTHWORMS&MICROBES WHICH WILL FERTILIZE AND AERORATE AND ENRICH OUR SOIL INSTEAD OF ROBBING IT AND MAKING IT POORER. Thanks Plano Patty for nice comments.
The comment that some one made about
trace minerals is absolutely correct. Farmers
have been miners for years for years and
they didn't know what they were doing. Also
the acid fertilizers bind up what ever other
trace minerals there are so that there are
virtually no trace minerals in what we feed
our animals as well as ourselves. Most
disease today relates back to the lack
of trace minerals in the soil. Go to
www.oceangrown.com and then call Don
to get more info. You need to purchase
Dr. Murray's book on using sea water to
restore our land.
My experience this year has been great. We
have done over 300 acres and the owners
and myself couldn't be happier. My goal was
to get organic hay for our miniature Herefords
and Lowline Angus (and soon to add - goats).
Our animals are grass fed with out chemicals
and drugs. My first project was forty acres with
about 5 acres covered with sand burs. Bill has
the money to buy any chemical or fertilizer that
that anyone has ever promoted. I used sea
water, liquid humates, molasses and potassium
nitrate last fall and again in early May.

seawater has 92 trace minerals, amino acids,
enzymes, beneficial bacteria
It comes from deep clear ocean about 50 to
60 miles east on Miami. Pollution in our oceans
gets into currents and the currents keep the
pollution up against the coasts (all the way up
the Atlantic - even iceland).
The water is also tested after returning to shore.

liquid humates (link from my website
www.robertbard.com) have fulvic acid
that detoxifies chemicals. It also has
chelated trace minerals (this is a good product
for us to take internally as it helps prevent
disease and detoxifies our bodies. I used this
product - called Terratol - to loose weight -
60 lbs since 1st of Feb without dieting. I will
have an e-book soon called a "Country Boy's
Wieght Lose Program") Humates are known
for improving fertility. Sand burs can't survive
good fertility.

Molasses adds 10% nitrogen, trace minerals,
and it feed the beneficial bacteria.

potassium nitrate - is a non toxic form of
nitrogen mined from the earth. It gives
an extra kick to hybrids like bermuda (not
necessary unless dealing with hybrids like
bermuda).

These products are cheap and they make
a big difference. Our cows gave it the taste
test and they go to the sea water + every
time.

Using this combination also increased quanity
quanity over previous years in every field.

You live close to us, and if you want I can
arrange for you to purchase some round
bales from my hay guy.
