Post subject:  Moss in pond

We have an increasing problem of moss in our 2 acre pond. We put
grass carp in the pond about two years ago, but that does not seem to
be helping. We raise catfish for our own use, but the moss makes it
very difficult to harvest the catfish. Any suggestion?

Charlotte-
There are some other discussions on this forum about ponds and moss, you may want to do a search and view those. To answer your question directly, I have been treating two ponds with cornmeal at the rate of 150 lbs/surface acre. It needs to go in the water vs on top of the moss. Otherwise, you have expensive bird food. Do this twice about two weeks apart and again in about 2-3 months. Don't overdo it, you will kill your fish from oxygen depletion. This works on algae only, not pond weeds or other rooted plants. Please write back to the forum with positive or negative results.

Hey, Tony,

I have about a 10000 square foot pond and I treated it with 50#s of agricutural corn meal . I placed 5#s in nylons and distributed them in the pond. It didn't do anything, do you think it was the nylons? Also, my black lab went in a retreived a couple of the bags out of about 4 feet of water so I'm sure that did not help. Any help would be appreciated, it has been two weeks already without results.

The rate is 150lbs per surface acre. I don't think it is worth applying it now, the weeds and algae are dying naturally.

I hope so, last year it stayed healthy all winter.
