Post subject:  Raspberries

I'm growing one black raspberry plant (planted in April) as a test and on the basis of a recommendation from an old friend who grew black raspberries with some success in Lakewood (old East Dallas). The variety is Black Hawk and is supposed to be relatively heat tolerant. I prepared my beds with Redenta's Rose Bed Prep and a little peat moss for acidity as well as lots of compost, extra lava sand, and extra green sand. It receives full sun for most of the day. The plant is only about 12-14" tall but it is lush and green and I noticed yesterday that despite the heat, it is starting to spread. So for those of you interested it raspberries, I'll keep you up to date on whether this works! I'm also going to try another variety called bababerry which is a red raspberry developed by TAMU. The nursery I ordered from was supposed to send me these also, but sent me blackberries by mistake instead. By the time I realized what they were, I didn't want to send them back b/c they were growing so well.
