I am growing siebel 9110 grapes and they are doing great. My question is whether to prune some of the excess growth on the long canes that grow beyond the grape clusters. It would seem to leave more energy for the plant and grape growth, and more sunlight for ripening the grapes if I were to cut these off a few feet beyond the clusters. Is there a reason to not trim these unruly ropes?

That refers to dormant pruning which I think I have a good enough handle on. I was asking about pruning now when the grapes are making 20 ft long shoots. I have heard that they can be pruned off about 4 leaves beyond the last cluster. I am trying to verify this.
