I have 2 Bradford Pear and and 1 oak tree that is developing bark problems. The botom 3-4 feet of bark is splitting open exposing the trunk of the tree. The splitting is getting worse. Does anybody know what is causing this problem?

This is an odd problem, especially among three trees. Can you take a digital picture and post it for us? Where do you live.

Has an answer to this question been found yet? I'm having the same problem with my Bradford Pear. Worse yet, it's being mobbed by dark orange gypsy moths that are laying eggs. This link has a picture of a tree in a similar situation: http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/ 2000/2175.html

Are the gypsy moths responsible for splitting the bark? Also, how can I safely get rid of them?
