:?: I am looking to plant 2 or 3 trees in my front yard and would like suggestions to which varieties would work best. I would like a slow to moderate growing tree that will provide some shade for our 2 story south facing house. A nice symetrical shape would be nice also. We would like trees that have deep roots.

Also, I currently have some hybrid poplar growing there (I planted them before I knew they were terrible trees for this area) closer to the street than the new trees will be. I would like to leave the poplars for a few years until the new trees get large enough.

:?: How do I get rid of the poplars? They have numerous roots spreading in all directions and lots of suckers coming up all over the place. So far no damage to the sidewalk, sprinkler system, foundation, etc. We have been mowing the suckers down and have cut out some of the roots that are on the surface with absolutely no damage to the trees.

Plant a shumard red oak. One of the faster growing oak trees, & has very nice fall color. The leaves on my oak, where blood red last fall, awesome looking!!

Or try a shantung maple.

I live not far from Plano, have since moved north.

My faves would be Burr Oak, Shumardi Red Oak, White Ash, Texas Ash, Shatung Maple.

As to the Poplars, cut them down, grund up the stumps, and keep mowing any suckers.
