I'm new to organic gardening. Will 1 oz. of orange oil mixed with 1 gal. of water kill spotted cucumber beetles? The yellow critters are everywhere in my garden. Since I live in a small town, it is hard to find certain organic ingredients; however, I have orange oil on hand and would like to use it if possible. I can also put in the mixture some garlic tea if someone thinks that would be helpful.

The recommended rate is less than two ounces per gallon of water, add molasses and compost tea. I am careful about using citrus products, though, because it can kill beneficials too. The best method I have found for controlling cuke beetles is hand-picking, or my favorite method of using a good battery powered vacuum cleaner with a good suction and suck them up and dump into soapy water to kill them. It's really an easy method once the cucurbits start flowering because the beetles tend to stay inside the flowers for easy catching. I rigged up a drinking straw on the end of my vac to increase suction and make them easier to zero in on.

Btw. my sister lives in Hugo. Small world.
