I have a tiny fenced back yard, which I have seeded with purslane, amaranth and lamb's quarters for use in salads and also to feed any excess to our goats and chickens. We keep the gates locked, and the fence is 6' high resulting in only the rare intruder.

This morning when I went out to pick purslane for our salad today, there was not one purslane leaf to be found in the approx. 10x30' area. The amaranth and lamb's quarters were untouched.

I have read on several websites that purslane has no insect pests, and if that is so, I am wondering if perhaps the wild birds or bats are enjoying my salad. Any ideas?

Thanks :)

You'll have to go out at night with a flashlight and look around out there. I suspect you might find a goat that can climb the six foot fence. They are very resourceful.

Thanks for the suggestion...I may try that tomorrow night :)

Yes, goats can pretty much go where they truly want to go, but I believe the wire fence would have bent from their weight, and no damage has been done to the fence. Also, the goats LOVE lamb's quarters, and the LQ in the yard has not been touched.

I did find a forum that mentioned sawfly larvae as damaging purslane, and another forum where a member's purslane was wiped out overnight, similar to mine.

Thanks again,
OmaLou
