My garden is separate from where my dogs are, but the birds often beat me to the strawberries. And any time my ex comes by he seems to find a few ready to eat.
I am resigned to growing strawberries for the birds and visitors to the yard. There are never enough to take inside, only a few to eat while out in the garden.
An item I learned recently - if you let the plant send out all of the runners then you won't get as much fruit as if you pinch them off. The energy then goes to berries, not runners. A trellis situation might need some runners, though.
