Does the Dirt Doctor recommend "vertical mulching" of trees. I couldn't find anything on the site using those search terms.

I have a young maple tree that was inproperly planted. I've cleared the trunk flare. (I think, since I've never done this before.) It is planted on a hill next to a sidewalk and there are large roots running very close to the surface away from the sidewalk.

I had an arborist come out and asked them about using an Air-Way or Air Spade for aeration but they recommended vertical mulching using a drill and filling in with a worm casting mix.

The drilling sounds like the "aerate" portion of the "Sick Tree Treatment." I'm guessing the fill mix would be acceptable as long as it didn't contain any chemicals.

Any thoughts or advice?

"Vertical mulching" is an odd term. I brings to mind mulch piled deep around trees, which is not a good thing to do.

This is wrong:

Pretty much anything that is included in the Sick Tree Treatment is probably going to be fine, but get a clear understanding of what they have in mind first! Drilling sounds ominous. Perhaps it was a poor word choice.
