Hello

We've had grasshopper infestations for the past two years, and this year they're back--although still small at this point. We're in central Texas. We tried the Nolo bait last year, but started too late and it's too late this year. We want to protect trees and plants on about 2.5 acres. We have two young magnolias, and the grasshoppers stripped the leaves last year, and even took some of the bark.

Any suggestions for organic or non-toxic spray for the magnolias and other shrubs/trees? We also graze 2 horses and a donkey in the same area as the trees and shrubs, so the treatment needs to be non-toxic to them.

Any ideas will be appreciated!

Thanks,

William

Thank you. I knew about Surround, but wanted to find an alternative that doesn't make the plants look white and chalky....however, I'd rather have the leaves chalky than gone!

i am ill. i spent the last 1/2 hour spilling my guts about the hopper plague(only to have it be swallowed into the ether) in my neighborhood. suffice it to say, i have tried the above kaolin clay plus dusting the swarms with de, and am putting out nolo now. nothing has worked. i wish i had 100k chickens, and several more rat terriers. they eat them constantly. i expect to have nothing green by the summer solstice. and as little as a mile away-nothing. i know how the egyptians must have felt. i hope the swarms don't expand, or real economic calamaties will ensue. it looks like my tanks will have plenty of water if anything saurvives. there might be a teaching experience if your kids want to see a plague in real time here in n collin cty.

Wow. Is there some kind of netting you can put over the top of it that will let light in but keep birds/grasshoppers out?

maybe if you had a tiny area. i am working 10 acres, and 10,000,000 hoppers. when they mature, look out. so far, all are still small.

Scale is everything - you didn't mention the 10 acres. Call Howard on Sunday and ask what he suggests.

i am already doing it. grasshoppers are migratory, and will move on/in as there is good eats. mine will be gone soon enough, and they will ravage someone else. the nolo really needs to work. i can't see where the other efforts have made any difference.

We're generally talking about liquid soap. I use Murphy Oil soap, sometimes dish soap, and there are specialized soaps like Plant Wash. Visit your local feed store to look for some of the horticultural ones. Safer Soap is a brand out there.

the hoppers are more numerous than before. the nolo went down 4 days ago at an extremely heavy rate, and more will go down next week. the kaolin is helping the tomatoes and strawberries to survive. nothing else in the garden appears to be capable of bucking the swarm. so far most of the fruit trees are alive. the infestation coverage is expanding. as the hoppers mature, i expect even greater coverage. pics are available at photobucket using the following address.

unless it is nearly infinitely better than kaolin and soap, it would have been a huge investment of time and money to slow down the inevitable. nothing short of killing them is acceptable. and when i went looking for it, no one seemed to carry it as it requires a 1 ton investment. the $100 shipping is not cool btw. maybe fall gardens are best anyway.

We were told by a customer recently that kaolin clays for pest management could be rather hard to locate. For anyone looking, Trinity Ceramic Supply has a few kinds to choose from. The least expensive being about $17 per 50 lb. bag. We are located at 9016 Diplomacy Row, Dallas TX 75247. 214-631-0540. Ask for Conor
