I like this web site. Heres the question. I've been to the feed store and they don't have corn gluten. *(&*&^(*@(. They do have dry molasses, alfalfa pellets and soy meal. I would like to fertilize my lawn and have something to energize the compost bin. What are your suggestions. Thanks.

First of all don't get confused between corn meal and corn gluten meal. They are two different products for two different uses.

If you have access to both alfalfa and soy, use the cheapest one, or use the easiest one to apply, or use both. These are excellent protein sources for your soil microbes.

Dry molasses is a sugar source for your microbes. Once you get your microbes and turf going, you should not need external sugar sources. I'm still learning about this but my thoughts at this point are that once everything is balanced, throwing sugar into the population only messes up the balance. Normally microbes get sugar from the plant roots in a complicated signalling system whereby the plants and microbes ask each other for more (or less) of whatever they need. Unless there is some reason why the plants cannot generate enough sugar by themselves through photosynthesis, I'm thinking you should not need molasses.
