We're beating the heat with bird names. There are Snowy Egrets, Snow Buntings and the Snowy Plover. Dark-eyed Juncos, which are here in the winter (remember winter?) are sometimes called snow birds.

My favorite Snow Bird, however, is the Snowy Owl. This large, beautiful owl nests in the tundra of the far north.

Males can be almost pure white, females and young birds have more dark markings. On very rare occasions a youngster might wonder all the way to Texas in the winter months. I saw one in Louisiana once.

I love the golden-yellow eyes.
