I am looking to overseed my Bermuda lawn with rye.

I have been told all kinds of different tales on how to do it right. Can you provide me with some insight about:

1. scalping the existing lawn
2. what type of seed to use
3. how much seed to apply
4. how much and how often to water
5. anything else I should be aware of

Your profile does not say where you live (a pet peeve of mine) so I'll assume you live in Dallas.

I'll skip over numbers 1-4 and get on with 5. Overseeding bermuda with rye is a big mistake. The problem comes in the spring when the tall rye grass provides so much shade to the bermuda that the bermuda delays the spring growth. Also what you don't realize when you are watering the new seed in the bermuda you are also watering the spring wild flower seeds that inevitably blow into the lawn. They remain mostly dormant all winter and sprout up in the spring giving you a weedy look.

My next door neighbor seeded rye last winter into his St Augustine. There are still bare spots where the rye shaded out the St Aug.

I over seed with a good rye grass every year here in Austin,Tx. and I never have a problem when the weather gets warm and stays warm, the rye dies and St.Augustine comes thru fine. This past year.2009 it was really warm here in Austin,70 days of100 degrees or higher and only 1 day of the week to use a sprinkler so I planted rye to give my yard a boost. :)

Hi Produce Guy and welcome!!

Can you please elaborate on your overseeding routine? I have been reading lawn forums since before this one started in 2003 and the overwhelming consensus is that overseeding warm weather grasses in the winter with cool season grasses is not a good idea. But every now and then someone comes along and has success with it. Now I have to probe to learn how you do it... :D :D :D

We know you live in Austin so that's out of the way.
  1. When do you overseed? Do you have a day or do you look for signals from Nature?
  2. How many pounds per 1,000 square feet of seed?
  3. What kind of seed and how do you apply?
  4. How do you water to establish the seed?
  5. How do you prepare the St Aug for the overseeding?
  6. When do you fertilize and with what?

How do you handle the transition from rye to St Aug in the spring?
  1. When do you start the transition?
  2. How high do you mow?
  3. When and how do you water in the spring?
  4. Do you fertilize in the spring? If yes, when and with what?
  5. Does your St Aug keep pace with the neighbors with respect to spring growth and color?

Thank you very much for writing. I think the reason I read about the problems with overseeding is that the forums are places to ask about problems. For people like you with successful practices, you don't need to ask! Thanks again. Looking forward to learning something new.
