On Howard's program Sunday he mentioned something that could be put in the hummingbird feeder that the wasps don't like but will not hurt the hummingbirds. Can someone tell me what it is?

Thanks.

Joanne

Does your feeder have yellow on it? Wasps are attracted to the yellow. Paint the yellow with red nail polish.

I have never heard of any substance that can be placed in the nectar, so would like to know that also.

Yellow to red is a good tactic, as noted.

Some feeders are designed with wasp guards. They allow the long bill and tongue of the hummingbird to reach the nectar but the distanceis too great for the wasps.

I have used some very attractive hummingbird feeders that had a poor design. They were all glass and the glass "feeding blossom" tended to wick the sugar water out and onto the side of the feeder. At times it become virtually covered by honey bees.

This company makes good hummingbird feeders and I think they have wasp guards.

(I do not sell their products or anything, they are just a Texas company that makes good hummingbird feeders. Not fancy, but well designed.)

I think the tip was spraying the feeder with spinosad.
