My ladies are doing well. I have 16 hens in a chicken tractor with wheels. The better the shade the more eggs I get, 10-12/day. If they are out in the sun all day I get only 6-8/day. Their tractor is actually the second one I've built. I keep getting better at it each version. I plan to build more tractors and buy more chicks probably some Australorps. This will have to wait until my son is 5-6 months old and the weather cools again.

I'm selling 6-7 dozen eggs/week right now. I can clear a whole dollar a day!!! I'm hoping by this time next year I will triple my hobby.

Also, it seems my hens really like St. Augustine grass. I moved them to a small patch of it and they ate it up. I mean it was unrecognizable. I'm interested to see how the St. Augustine recovers from that much nibbling.

Well, I just wanted to share and maybe hear from other birdbrains.

We've had a few chickens--only 7 now--for the last 3-4 years. We have a coop on wheels, but haven't used it like it needs to be. Plan to as soon as we can get the time. Right now, the birds are close to the house, and they eat young St Augustine in the yard every chance they get. Mostly they just poop on the porch--the reason I'm anxious to get them on the mobile coop in the pasture.

The eggs make it all worthwhile. And no grasshoppers.

We have a baby! ok, I know that means I have a rooster - but there is no ordinance against them where I live. It is so cute. I've got the little family up here at the store for now - great learning experience for the kiddos who come up to the shop. That little mama sat on 2 eggs - one was a "dummy" egg and the other one her little gem.

They are so fun to have around, each with their own personalilty. If they didn't dig so much up at the house, I'd have more up here at the shop. But I am trying to establish gardens up here - the bantams aren't as descrtuctive as the game and bigger hens. One day I swore dogs were in my garden digging holes! ha ha
