I don't think he's a mantis, as his head is slender and not the classic "bug eye" of a mantis. He's about 3 inches long, bright green, with what look like long folded wings (like a mantis). His legs are very thin and look like sticks (again, like a mantis). I can't see his front part very well, as he's buried himself head down in my N. Guinea impatiens potted plant. Might he be a young mantis?

certainly sounds like a mantis. I know there's a brown variety and a bright green one. Can you take a picture? Do you have howard's Bug book to help identify it?

Hi Sandi,

No, I don't have the bug book. He's gone this morning. I saw your post on 4-line and assassin bugs - nature is indeed very cool. I guess I'll just have to let mine fight it out! I think there's probably enough mint for everyone.

The way I look at it is the plants that they suck on are very hardy and bounce back with vigor. My golden oregano looks horrible right now but when the bugs are gone I just trim it back and always have enough for cooking.

For what it's worth, my mandids just hatched on Saturday. It was pouring buckets, and I went back to check on the plants, and there they were, crawling all over the place. I was very excited.

I have to wonder, however... are these things stupid or just not hungry? With all the rain, there were bugs everywhere. It was like a buffet for these guys, but they weren't eating. What's the deal? Little bugs would crawl right by them, and there they sat with their little hands folded together.

Maybe they were still saying grace when I happened upon them...
