Greetings from sunny Michigan! Yes..well it is below freezing too. I have the honor of being the third generation to farm this piece of ground. I took over the farm full time in 1997. My reasearch into sustainable and self sufficent farming also led to organic farming.
I grow about 8 acres of vegetables, 140 acres of alfalfa, with oats, barley, and some corn to feed my livestock. I maintain a small herd of goats (40) and pasture 6 to 20 head of Hereford steers. I have started adding old genetics heifers as I find them. I have a few chickens..People keep giving me chickens..LOL. Geese number an average flock of 40. The cats and dogs do most of my rodent control. I am currently at the I need more poo to feed the land to feed more poo givers. Recovery has been slow but much better than I had hoped.
I do as much work as possible without the use of diesel. The farm was leased for about 10 years. I am just shocked at what 10 years did to our soil. So was my father. I still have patches where weeds barely grow.
I turn my compost with a tractor. You can hate me now!.LOL. I am very pleased to have found this site. I look forward to all your posts. The chickens are at the door and the goats want water. I think that means coffee break is OVER!..remember..If everthing went right, it just wouldn't be any fun. DIRT
