Figs are trees that can grow up to 10 feet tall depending on the variety. According to Howard's book, shriveled fruit may result from using the wrong variety for this area or from hot, dry weather. Not know your sister's variety it's hard to say. The varieties best for N.Tx are Celeste, Texas Everbearing, Brown Turkey and Alma.
They don't need much in the way of amendments, other than a basic organic program. They need plenty of water and heavy mulching around the roots.
