My neighbor has a large pine tree, (60 feet+) and it has many bore holes and has been struck by lightning but LOOKS Ok. I hesitate to say healthy.
Anyway, I remember some years ago watching a person drill holes around the base of the tree and inject a medicine into each hole and seal the holes. Apparently the cappilary action within the trunk carries the medicine through the trunk and to the branches etc. and killed the insects and brought the tree back to healthy.
Problem is I cannot locate anyone in Houston that does this anymore.

I need suggestions quickly before this tree gets beyond help. Any ideas? :?:

Alfie-
The “chemical boys” often use the treatment you mention during tree treatments. This is an organic forum, which strives to understand the underlying cause and not the symptom. Our advice would be to improve the health and growing conditions as much as possible so the tree has the ability to fend for itself. Applying chemicals is often temporary; it just takes longer for the tree to die.
Go to the front page of this web site and look for the sick tree treatment. Follow those instructions and go organic all the way. If you have used a chemical weed and feed fertilizer check the label. They say not to use it around tree roots. You said the tree is 60 feet tall that means the entire yard has some roots from this tree on it. If this product was applied you need to do an extra step. Apply Zeolite to the entire yard to "soak up" the chemicals.
Again, this is not me talking alone, the people who make the fertilizer know that it kills trees but also know that people don't read labels and trees take a while to die.

Also bear in mind that if it was struck by lightning and the path to ground went through the core of the tree (as opposed to the surface) the tree is likely a goner. Strikes that run down the outside of the tree will scar them down that side but are survivable. Strikes that don't show an outside path generally went down through the core and that is almost always fatal to the tree.

Alfie, I had the same type treatment done to my tall pines about 9 years ago and I think it helped at the time. Beetles were doing the same thing to my trees. I can't help on arborists in Houston that do this, but that's where I would start..... in the yellowpages and surely some arborist will be able to help. Good luck.
